VPS plans are usually described by a handful of specifications: virtual CPU cores, RAM, storage and bandwidth. Choosing too little leads to slow performance, while choosing too much wastes money. This guide explains each specification and how to size a VPS sensibly.

CPU (vCPU cores)

The CPU processes requests, runs PHP and handles database queries. VPS plans list virtual CPU cores (vCPUs).

  • 1 to 2 vCPUs: small business websites, a few WordPress sites, development and testing.
  • 2 to 4 vCPUs: busier WordPress or WooCommerce sites, several client websites, small web applications.
  • 4 or more vCPUs: high-traffic sites, larger applications, many concurrent users or heavy background tasks.

RAM (memory)

RAM holds data the server is actively using. Websites, databases, caching and control panels all use memory. Running out of RAM causes slowdowns and errors.

  • 1 to 2 GB: lightweight sites without a control panel.
  • 2 to 4 GB: a few WordPress sites, or a single busier site, especially with a control panel.
  • 8 GB or more: online shops, many sites, large databases or memory-hungry applications.

Control panels and email services use memory too, so allow extra headroom if you plan to install them.

Storage

Storage holds your operating system, website files, databases, email and backups.

  • Type: SSD storage is much faster than traditional hard drives, and NVMe SSDs are faster still. Speed matters for database-driven websites.
  • Size: add up your website files, databases and email, then allow room for growth, logs and local backups.

Bandwidth and data transfer

Bandwidth refers to the amount of data your server can send to visitors. Websites with many images, downloads or videos use more. Check whether the plan has a monthly limit and what happens if you exceed it.

Other important factors

  • Operating system: most web servers use Linux distributions. Choose one your team or provider supports.
  • IP addresses: a dedicated IPv4 address is usually included; check if you need more.
  • Backups and snapshots: confirm whether they are included or cost extra.
  • Management level: managed plans cost more but save time and reduce risk.
  • Upgrade path: make sure you can scale resources easily as you grow.
