Domain Auto-Renewal: Pros, Cons and Best Practices
Auto-renewal is one of the easiest ways to protect your domain, but it still needs a little attention. Here is how it works, when to use it, and how to…

Many domain expiries are simply the result of someone forgetting. Auto-renewal reduces that risk by automatically starting the renewal process before your domain expires. It is not a set-and-forget solution, however. Understanding how it works helps you get the benefits without surprises.
How auto-renewal works
When auto-renewal is enabled, your provider generates a renewal invoice ahead of the expiry date. Depending on your account and payment method, the invoice may be paid automatically or you may need to complete payment yourself. Once payment is received, the domain is renewed for the chosen period.
The benefits
- Fewer accidental expiries: renewal starts even if you forget the date.
- Continuous service: your website and email keep working without interruption.
- Brand protection: there is less risk of someone else registering your domain.
- Less admin: especially helpful when you manage several domains.
The limitations
- Payment can still fail if a card has expired or a wallet has insufficient funds.
- Notifications still matter: if invoices go to an inbox nobody checks, problems may be missed.
- You may renew domains you no longer need unless you review your list regularly.
Best practices
1. Review your domain list once a year
Decide which domains are still important. Keep auto-renew on for your main business domains and consider letting unused campaign or experimental domains lapse deliberately.
2. Keep billing contacts current
Use a shared email address for billing, such as accounts@yourbusiness.co.ug, and make sure at least two people can see renewal notices.
3. Watch for the renewal invoice
Add a calendar reminder around the time the invoice is expected. Confirm that it has been paid and the expiry date has moved forward.
4. Combine with multi-year renewals
Renewing for two or more years at a time, with auto-renewal as a backup, gives the strongest protection for your most important domains.
5. Keep ownership with the business
Register domains under the company’s details and client account, not a former employee’s or developer’s personal account. This makes renewals and transfers much easier.
How to enable auto-renewal
- Log in to the Salama Hosting Client Area.
- Open Domains and select the domain.
- Look for the auto-renewal setting and turn it on.
- Check that your billing details and contact email are correct.
If you do not see the option for a particular domain extension, contact support to confirm how renewals are handled for that domain.
Should every domain use auto-renewal?
| Domain type | Recommendation |
|---|---|
| Main business or organisation domain | Auto-renew on, plus multi-year renewal |
| Domains used for email | Auto-renew on |
| Brand protection domains (other extensions, misspellings) | Auto-renew on if they matter to your brand |
| Old campaign or test domains | Review each year and decide |
